City of Toronto unveils Bathurst Quay Common: A new waterfront oasis
Today, Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik (Spadina-Fort York) and City of Toronto staff celebrated the grand opening of Bathurst Quay Common, a new waterfront park.
The name Bathurst Quay Common commemorates the spirit of the Bathurst Quay neighbourhood. The project at the historic Canada Malting property is part of the City’s Bathurst Quay Neighbourhood Plan.
Prominently located at the western gateway to the harbour at 1 Eireann Quay, Bathurst Quay Common provides approximately 4,000 square metres of park space offering stunning views of Toronto’s inner harbour and skyline, framed by restored heritage buildings and Ireland Park.
Alongside abundant public seating, the space features a multi-purpose plaza that can accommodate special events and cultural programming, and architectural accent lighting to illuminate the Canada Malting silos during the evening.
In 2025, a new arts and cultural centre operated by the non-profit Canada Ireland Foundation will open within the heart of the park. The ‘Corleck Building’ will function as a four-season waterfront hub for community, artistic and cultural programming in a beautifully restored heritage building.
The OCAD University is also developing programming to animate the interior of the restored malting silos as an exhibition space.
Learn more about the Bathurst Quay Neighbourhood Plan by visiting the City’s webpage: https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/planning-development/planning-studies-initiatives/bathurst-quay-neighbourhood-plan/.
The grand opening of Bathurst Quay Common comes at the perfect time – this dynamic new space will be open to the public as a focal point for Nuit Blanche on Saturday, October 5 – a free all-night celebration of contemporary art that transforms Toronto’s public spaces into extraordinary landscapes and animates cultural sites throughout the city.
A full list of Nuit Blanche programming is available on the City’s webpage: https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/festivals-events/nuitblanche/
Quotes:
“Public spaces are the heartbeats of our communities. They are the places where we gather with friends and family, where laughter echoes and where ideas are born. Bathurst Quay Common is designed to be a welcoming haven for everyone—a place where all voices can be heard and a space where all are invited to participate in the tapestry of life that we weave together for generations to come.
- Mayor Olivia Chow
“Bringing this vision of a green, inviting and reimagined public space at Bathurst Quay to life is a shared effort of City staff, architects, contractors, community leaders, institutional partners and most importantly, residents and those who love our waterfront, that contributed important ideas, expertise and hopes. Thanks to their passion and dedication, we've transformed this previously industrial place into a spectacular destination on our waterfront for everyone to enjoy.”
- Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik (Spadina-Fort York)
