RENEWAL

The first exhibition in the new Postmark Gallery features artworks by 24 talented PNW artists, each sharing their own artistic perspective on the theme of trees, branches, and growth through nature. Also on view as a part of this exhibition will be a grove of wishing trees, uniquely crafted by local artists, with the intention of engaging the community in an opportunity to help create a leaf to add to the trees, sharing wishes, hopes or dreams, and helping to shape the vision for this new space and for Auburn!

Fall Exhibition: "*Wishing Trees: **A Community Art Project*"
Exhibition dates: *through January 2024
*Artists: *Greg Bartol, Steve Nagode, Steve Ray, Anita Schuller & Frank Whylie*

"*Last chance to view! Exhibition closing January 3rd.*"

Wishing Tree

Starting in summer 2017, the City of Auburn began a community art project called the “Wishing Tree.” The wishing tree ritual has multiple sources, among which is an Armenian tradition dating back to pre-Christian times. Participants would write a hope, dream, wish or desire on pieces of cloth or paper and tie them to the tree. Wishing trees have been found all over the world in places like Glasgow, Hong Kong, Finland, New York and San Francisco.

For Auburn’s Wishing Trees, the community has been welcomed to draw and write wishes on leaves that are being displayed from metal trees as a work of collaborative community art. The goal of this project is to bring people together and create a work of public art that expresses the uniqueness and diversity of our growing community. Our hope is that each unique leaf can celebrate the wish and character of each individual participant, as well as collectively representing the beauty, wishes, and unity of our community.

This grove of beautiful metal Wishing Trees, created for Auburn’s inaugural exhibition at the new Postmark Center for the Arts, were created by the following talented local artists: Greg Bartol, Steve Nagode, Steve Ray, Anita Schuller, and Frank Whylie

POSTMARK IN THE NEWS

*Postmark Center for the Arts receives John D. Spellman Award for Historic Preservation*

We were notified this week that the City of Auburn has been honored with the John D. Spellman Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation and presented with an Award for Excellence in Adaptive Reuse for the stunning rehabilitation of the Auburn Post Office as the Postmark Center for the Arts.

The John D. Spellman Awards recognize achievements in historic preservation. The awards are presented once a year. Spellman was the first King County Executive and 18th governor of Washington. He established the County’s Historic Preservation Program in 1980.

We are pleased to now refer to our new jewel in downtown as "the award-winning Postmark Center for Arts" - congratulations to all involved that are bringing this dream to reality for our community!

"The Postmark Center for the Arts opened at 20 Auburn Ave. on Sept. 20. The new city-owned arts and cultural space has breathed new life into a historic colonial revival-style property that has served the community in one way or another since it was built in 1937."

Aidyn, alongside her cohort Amanda Jenkinson, spends her working days in the brand-new Postmark Center for the Arts, curating artist exhibits and readying the community for classes and activities.
