City of Toronto announces longlist for the 50th anniversary of the Toronto Book Awards

As Torontonians dive into their summer reading lists, the City of Toronto and Toronto Public Library (TPL) are pleased to announce the books longlisted for the 2024 Toronto Book Awards.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Toronto Book Awards originally established by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour books of literary merit that are inspired by the diverse stories that shape Toronto.

• ‘The Roosting Box’ by Kristen Den Hartog (Goose Lane Editions)
• ‘I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together’ by Maurice Vellekoop (Random House Canada)
• ‘Reuniting with Strangers’ by Jennilee Austria-Bonifacio (Douglas & McIntyre)
• ‘Black Boys Like Me’ by Matthew R. Morris (Viking/Penguin Random House)
• ‘The Rasmussen Papers’ by Connie Gault (Thistledown Press)
• ‘The Afterpains’ by Anna Julia Stainsby (Random House Canada)
• ‘The Education of Aubrey’ by Alex Pugsley (Biblioasis)
• ‘And the Walls Came Down’ by Denise Da Costa (Dundurn Press)
• ‘Much Ado About Nada’ by Uzma Jalaluddin (Harper Avenue/HarperCollins)
• ‘The Master Plan’ by Michael Healey (Playwrights Canada Press)
• ‘The Suicide Magnet’ by Paul McLaughlin (Dundurn Press)
• ‘Land of No Regrets’ by Sadi Muktadir (HarperCollins)

The shortlist will be released later this summer with the winner announced at a ceremony in early November. The annual award offers $15,000 in prize money, with each shortlisted finalist granted $1,000 and $10,000 awarded to the winner.

The esteemed Canadian writers and literary advocates sitting on this year’s jury include Desmond Cole, Anthony De Sa, Jane Farrow, Rabindranath Maharaj and Kerri Sakamoto.
