City of Toronto celebrates Bike Month with Bike to Work Day group ride on June 6
Bike Month, Toronto’s annual celebration of cycling, kicks off with a group ride to City Hall on Thursday, June 6. Mayor Olivia Chow will be joined by other members of Council on the ride to Nathan Phillips Square to participate in a celebration co-hosted by Cycle Toronto.
Cyclists can join the group ride at any of four starting points across the city. Each group ride will have Cycle Toronto Ride Guides to ensure riders stay on course and arrive safely.
The four official meet-up points and start times are:
• Southeast corner of Bloor Street and High Park Avenue at 7 a.m.
• East Lynn Park, Danforth Avenue west of Woodbine Avenue, at 7 a.m.
• Southwest corner of Davisville Avenue and Yonge Street at 7:15 a.m.
• Southwest corner of Bay and Charles Streets at 7:30 a.m.
Bike Month began in 1989 and encourages Torontonians to continue to ride, ride more often and raise awareness of cycling as a great way to get around the city. From June 1 to 30, Bike Month features dozens of bicycle-themed events across Toronto including free group rides, cycling workshops, webinars, contests and social events.
The number of people choosing to cycle is increasing year-over-year thanks to an expanded and connected bikeway network. The City has made significant infrastructure improvements that make cycling safer, including the installation of 20 protected intersections that enhance safety for everyone by increasing the visibility of people cycling, providing dedicated queuing areas for people cycling and reducing driver speeds.
More information about Bike Month, the Bike to Work Day group commute and the June 22 waterfront ride is available on the City’s website: toronto.ca/BikeMonth.
Quote:
“The City of Toronto is committed to promoting cycling and increasing cycling safety beyond this month of special events. As a cyclist, I’m happy to see Toronto’s cycling infrastructure expand year-over-year while increasing safety and providing more opportunities for people to get around our beautiful city. Cycling provides numerous benefits to Toronto residents and the environment. I encourage everyone to cycle when they can and explore the many Bike Month events available throughout the city.”
– Mayor Olivia Chow
"Toronto keeps moving forward on becoming an outstanding cycling city. Bike Month is a chance to celebrate the convenience, practicality, and joy riding a bike can offer and help foster a culture of cycling. Being a part of Bike Month doesn't require special attire or have to be an identity. It can be as simple as rediscovering your neighborhood one pedal at a time. I look forward to seeing folks on June 6 for the Bike to Work Day group ride to City Hall.”
– Michael Longfield, Executive Director, Cycle Toronto
Toronto is home to more than three million people whose diversity and experiences make this great city Canada’s leading economic engine and one of the world’s most diverse and livable cities.
